'Our role is integral to football's future' - newly appointed regulator the regulator's chair
The team's persistent issues constitute a "serious issue" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to examine team situations in such situations, the newly appointed chairman David Kogan has announced.
In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, showed understanding towards supporters of the Owls.
The chairman convened with four fan organizations connected to the South Yorkshire club recently.
The team have been struggling on and off the field in this season, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in last month.
"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.
"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the great brands for the English game and in recent days we have met supporters' organizations.
"We're now looking to get powers... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they require examination and dealt with."
Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status
The team's struggling chairman the Thai businessman indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with interested parties.
Missed wage deadlines on time in March and May caused limitations by the football authorities in mid-year, blocking the team from conducting any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in August.
Official's Viewpoint
Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, teams facing challenges where people are committed to a regional establishment that has represented their community in many cases.
"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for each organization that over recent decades have faced collapse, or nearly ceased operations, for reasons that have nothing to do with the fans themselves."
Questioned about whether the authority might compel an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."
But the chairman emphasized that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the regulator would prefer to work with them.
"Our least desirable course of action is start getting involved with an individual club, an individual owner, without being able to work with that chairman to fix the issues that the club's facing and the owner's facing," the regulator explained.
"In actuality, when you review the record of football, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been some owners, not many, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the manner they have operated their teams and eventually refuse to accept accountability for the future."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'
Kogan met with officials from numerous teams to explain the responsibilities of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.
"The role holds considerable importance, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear incredibly quickly," the regulator warned.
"This represents everyone's worst fear in the realm of domestic football is a major achievement - we've got to keep it going.
"Considerable investment entering the sport and has been channeled for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to take a really clear view on challenges and obviously, of the coming seasons."
Elite Division Worries
Elite division representatives objected to the creation of a regulator because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the regulator stated: "I fully support the achievement and development as an commercial operation of the elite league.
"I of all people understand the concern of undermining the top flight as an elite competition of the nation. But concurrently, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, indeed, they have been informing us confidentially they have a significant confidence."
Partisan Associations
The regulator remains subject to a "thorough examination" by the public appointments commissioner after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in 2020.
The chairman provided financial support for government minister the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.
"I have been entirely transparent regarding my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," Kogan said.
"I currently have no participation in any form of political activity."
